Dynamic response of shape memory polymer composite plate in low velocity large mass impact

Abstract

Low velocity impact response of the reinforced hybrid composite plates embedded with Shape Memory Alloy (hereinafter-called SMA) wires subjected to large mass impact is investigated in this paper. The interaction between the impactor and the composite plate is considered in the impact analysis. The SMA wires are embedded within the layers of a composite laminate made of graphite-epoxy. The effect of SMA wires on contact force history, deflection, in-plane stresses and strains of the structure were studied. First-order shear deformation theory of plates and Fourier series method are utilized to solve the governing equations of the composite plate analytically. The interaction between the impactor and the plate is modeled with the help of the system having two degrees-of-freedom, consisting of springs-masses. The linearized Hertzian contact theory is used in the impact analysis of laminated composite hybrid plates. The results of the impact analysis illustrates that, if the amount of volume fraction of the SMA wires is increased, the maximum deflections, in-plane stresses and strains are decreased, while the impact force, impact duration, and the time which the contact force reaches its maximum value are increased. Therefore, the rate of impact energy imparted to the plate is decreased and the contact force is maximized in a more extensive time, so that to minimize the shock effect on the structure.
